MEALS ON KILIMANJARO
Meals on Kilimanjaro | Food During Your Trek
One of the highlights of a Kilimanjaro trek with Re Leone Tanzania Safaris is the carefully prepared meals that keep you energized and nourished throughout your climb. Although climbing Africa’s highest peak is physically demanding, delicious, balanced, and nutritious food ensures that your body gets the fuel it needs to perform at high altitude.
Typical Meal Structure
Climbers can expect three main meals per day while on the trek, plus snacks to keep energy levels consistent:
Breakfast
Breakfast is usually served early in the morning, often around 6:00–7:00 AM, to provide enough energy for the day’s hike. Typical breakfast items include:
Porridge (oatmeal, millet, or maize)
Eggs (boiled, scrambled, or fried)
Toast or chapati
Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate
Fresh fruit when available
Lunch
Lunch is typically a packed meal eaten on the trail, often consisting of:
Sandwiches or chapati wraps with vegetables and protein
Pasta or rice dishes
Fruit or energy bars
Hot drinks when possible
Dinner
Dinner is served at camp after reaching the day’s destination. Meals are hearty and designed to restore energy lost during hiking. Typical dinner options include:
Stews (vegetables, meat, or legumes)
Rice, pasta, or potatoes
Soup
Fresh vegetables when possible
Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate
Dessert such as cake or fruit
Snacks & Energy Boosters
To keep energy levels steady between meals, Re Leone Tanzania Safaris recommends packing:
Trail mix (nuts, dried fruits, and seeds)
Energy bars or chocolate
Biscuits or crackers
Instant drinks (electrolytes or hot chocolate)
Special Dietary Needs
The team at Re Leone Tanzania Safaris is experienced in accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions, including:
Vegetarian or vegan diets
Gluten-free or low-allergen meals
Special medical requirements
Advance notice is recommended to ensure proper preparation and availability of ingredients at high altitude.
Hydration
Proper hydration is as important as food. Drinking 3–5 liters of water per day is recommended, along with herbal teas and electrolyte drinks to prevent dehydration and altitude-related fatigue. The crew ensures that drinking water is boiled, filtered, or treated for safety.
Meals Experience on the Mountain
Aside from nutrition, meals are also a time to socialize and enjoy the camaraderie with your fellow climbers and guides. At each camp, the staff prepares and serves meals with care, often singing, clapping, and creating a warm, positive atmosphere — a unique and memorable part of the Kilimanjaro experience with Re Leone Tanzania Safaris.
